Firearms and ammunition are never sold through the online checkout. They are available by enquiry, quotation or reservation only, and every sale is completed in person at our store after your identity, competency and licence have been verified.
1. The law we work under
Frontier Guns & Ammo is a licensed firearms dealer (dealer licence number: to be confirmed). All trade in firearms and ammunition is governed by the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 and its regulations, and every acquisition, transfer and disposal is recorded in our dealer's register and reported through the South African Police Service (SAPS) as the Act requires. Our registers and stock are open to inspection by SAPS.
2. Buying a firearm
- Competency: you need a valid competency certificate for the type of firearm and the purpose, for example self-defence, occasional hunting or sport, dedicated hunting or sport, or business use.
- Choose and reserve: choose the firearm with us. We normally ask for payment or a deposit to reserve it for you.
- Apply for the licence: we help you complete the licence application with the motivation that fits your intended use, and it is submitted to SAPS through the Designated Firearms Officer. You will need a safe that meets the legal requirements.
- We keep the firearm: the firearm stays in our safe, in our name, until your licence is issued.
- Collect in person: once the licence is issued, you collect the firearm yourself at our store, with your identity document. We complete the transfer, check the firearm with you and hand it over.
Firearms are not couriered to buyers. Licensing times are set by SAPS, not by us.
3. Ammunition, primers and propellant
- Ammunition is sold only to the holder of a licence for a firearm of the same calibre, on presentation of that licence and an identity document.
- The Act limits how much ammunition you may possess for each licensed firearm. Holders with dedicated hunter or dedicated sports-person status may be subject to different limits. You are responsible for staying within the limit that applies to you, and we may decline a sale that would exceed it.
- Primers and propellant for reloading are regulated. We may ask for your licence and dedicated status before selling them, and we sell them only for collection or by approved transport.
4. Selling or trading in a firearm
Bring the firearm together with its licence and your identity document to the Klerksdorp store. If we buy it, or take it as a trade-in, the transfer is recorded in our dealer's register as the Act requires. Please do not bring a firearm to the store without its licence.
5. Air rifles, knives and self-defence products
Air rifles within the limits set by the Act do not need a firearm licence, but we sell them, knives and self-defence products only to persons aged 18 or older and may ask for identification.
6. Our right to refuse
We may refuse or cancel any sale of a firearm, ammunition or related item if we cannot verify your identity or licence, if a document appears invalid, or if we believe the sale would not be lawful or safe. Where you have paid, we refund you in line with our Returns Policy.
7. Your responsibilities
- Store firearms and ammunition in a safe that meets the legal requirements, and carry them only as the Act allows.
- Keep your licences and competency current and renew them in good time.
- Report a lost or stolen firearm to SAPS immediately.
